Increasing the Amount of Certified Fiber Available

Verso Paper is committed to increasing the amount of third-party certified fiber in our products, and is working to help increase the overall amount of certified fiber available in the marketplace by:

  • Supporting mutual recognition of credible third-party forest certification programs around the globe, including the FSC, SFI®, CSA, PEFC, ATFS and Master Logger standards.
  • Supporting the Master Logger program in key states by underwriting the cost of audits for suppliers who complete the certification program.
  • Conducting meetings with owners of large, non-certified forests to help them understand and participate in the certification process.
  • Actively partnering with fiber suppliers whose lands are third-party certified to grow the volume of wood fiber Verso Paper purchases from them.
  • Actively participating in state forestry organizations such as the Maine Forest Products Council and the Michigan Forest Products Council, which develop plans with landowners and wood consumers to increase forest certification to credible standards.
  • Working with government, non-governmental organizations, customers and trade associations to promote awareness, understanding and certification to credible third party forest certification standards.

Verso Paper Sponsors Family Forest Alliance

As a company that depends on the health of small, privately owned forests in the United States, Verso Paper is committed to supporting efforts that encourage certification and responsible forestry on America’s family forests. As part of our sustainability commitment, we became a founding sponsor of the Family Forest Alliance, a national collaboration to support responsible forestry on private lands. Forest certification continues to grow in the United States with 150 million acres now certified, but most of the certified land is in large public and private ownerships. Only about 4 million acres of the 250 million acres of family owned forestlands in the United States are enrolled in a certification program. Through the Alliance, Verso will work together with individuals and other organizations to promote forest stewardship through FSC standards and to increase certification on family owned lands.
